How Do You Find Time to Build an eBay Business?

by Kerry Beck

Time shouldn't be an issue when you grow an eBay business. You may think I'm crazy, but you simply need to implement some simple techniques to stay on track. Let me share three aspects of time management to help you get up and running with a profitable eBay business.

1. SCHEDULE

Make a list of your weekly activities. Be sure to included meal preparation, work out of the home, laundry, chauffeuring kids to activities. Your list should include the non-negotiables, those activities that must be done every week. Get a weekly planner or print one from the internet. Section each day into hour slots. Write all your weekly activities on your planner.

Take a look at the time slots that are open. Find two hours every day where you can pencil in activities for your eBay business. If you can't find any time between the time you wake up and the time you go to bed, then consider waking up an two hours earlier for three months. That's what I do. I wake up two hours before the rest of my family so I can be productive during my best thinking time. Believe me, it's not the end of the world. And, if you really want to build an eBay business that can operate on partial auto-pilot, you must put in some extra hours at the beginning.

Now that you have two hours per day to devote to your eBay business, start filling in those times with eBay business activities. For instance, every
Monday you may package and ship the items for which you received payment.
Tuesdays may be spent taking pictures of the items you plan to list the following Sunday. On Wednesdays, you may write your titles and descriptions for each item. I'm sure you get the idea.

Now that you have a weekly schedule and know what you are suppose to do each day to grow your eBay business, do it. Don't open your email during those two hours. That will only distract you from activities that make a profit in your pocketbook. Don't be distracted; be focused on building your business.

2. DELEGATE

As your eBay business grows, you will discover that you can't do everything yourself. You need to delegate activities to other family members. Even your five year old child can stuff invoices or fliers in packages before they are sealed. Older children can help take digital photos for you or print shipping labels for packages. List the items you can delegate to someone else and give it up. My children help me immensely in our businesses. They began helping when they were 6, 9, and 11 years old. Now they are all teenagers and completely manage areas of my business by themselves. They do the shipping, bookkeeping, invoices, and much more.

If you don't have children, hire a young person to help you. If they take care of shipping, you might pay them by the piece, instead of by the hour. As young people help you with eBay, they will begin to acquire an entrepreneurial education and have more freedom in their lives as an adult. Entrepreneurs have more financial freedom and gain more control over their lives.

3. SEASONS OF LIFE

Realize there are seasons of life that you can devote more time to your online auction business. When your children are home for the summer time, use that time to teach them how to help you with eBay and pay them well. If you homeschool your children, use the summer time for entrepreneurial education. For those who school year round, take off one week each month. Use that time to prepare your listings for the following month.

These are just a few ideas to help you find time for eBay. Most of all, be creative and consistent as you work faithfully on your eBay business.
